April 27
Alta guard station-upper Cardiff
Elevation, slope angles and aspects
8300-11200', angles over 35°, all aspects
Snow conditions
6-10" of light density over the dense, spongy, early storm snow. The old surface below, was well frozen at elevation traveled through. Sluffing was within the new snow
and common on steeper angles. Natural activity was limited to a few scattered shallow soft slab fractures although, some evidence of last week's extended warming was still visible.
By early afternoon, ski cuts on sun warmed slopes were initiating slides down to the old surface.
Weather
Clear and sunny, with light winds and cool early morning temperatures, gradually warming.
Evaluation
Right side up storm and a clear cool night provided a late April powder day. Latest weather guess suggests unsettled weather with clouds and increased wind. Radiation cooling could be limited. May be some active wind drifts and increasing wet activity with day time heaating.
